Are kiln dried logs suitable for all types of wood-burning appliances?

The UK Government introduced regulations for customers that want to burn wood in wood burning appliances. These regulations came into effect in May 2021. The aim is to improve air quality, changing the types of fuel that customers are use in their wood burning appliances.

Burning Logs

As of May 2021, the sale of wet wood is considered unlawful. As a result, kiln dried logs, or dry logs, are the only logs you can burn in wood burning appliances throughout the country, this excludes open fires. When burning logs, the logs must have a moisture content of less than twenty percent, producing minimal smoke.

In addition to this, the logs must not exceed thirty centimetres in diameter when using them in a wood burning appliance of six hundred millimetres in depth.

What Logs Should I Be Burning?

Even though these regulations came into effective more than three years ago, many consumers are still unsure on what logs are best for burning in their wood burning appliances. Kiln dried logs are the best for wood burning appliances, due to their low moisture content. When using kiln dried logs, you will enjoy the best performance.

Oak is considered one of the best hardwoods to burn in your wood burning appliance. Oak has a high BTU (British Thermal Unit) rating, producing a lot of heat, while offering a slow and steady burn. Other popular wood options include ash and birch.

Wet Wood vs Dry Wood

Wet wood, also known as unseasoned or green wood, are logs that have just been cut from the tree, burning quickly with lots of smoke. These are low quality with exceptionally high moisture contents.

Dry wood, also known as kiln dried logs, have been dried in a kiln with controlled temperatures, humidity, and air flow, ensuring that they have a low moisture content of less than twenty percent and they are dried evenly throughout.

Under the new legislations that came into effect in 2021, the only type of fuel you can use in wood burning appliances in the United Kingdom is kiln dried logs, that have a low moisture level, burning for longer, with minimal smoke.
