What is the best way to light kiln-dried logs for a long-lasting fire?

Lighting a fire is not always an easy task. Arriving at your camp site late at night, or arriving home late and having to light a fire in the cold winter, can be much harder than you think. When it comes to lighting a fire using our kiln dried logs, we recommend starting from the bottom and working your way up.

In order to light a fire for a long lasting burn, we recommend you have the following at hand:

  • Approximately five kiln dried logs, depending on the size of your fireplace or wood burner
  • Up to eight pieces of our natural kindling sticks
  • Our natural fire starters
  • A long lighter, keeping a distance between the flame and your hands

Let’s Begin

There are a few steps to ensure your kiln dried logs provide you with a long burn:

Prepare Your Fireplace or Stove

We cannot stress enough how important it is to clean your fireplace or stove before each new fire. Never start a new fire on any debris or ash already in the fire place, this will hamper the burn duration of our kiln dried logs. When you remote any ash or debris, you improve airflow, minimising the risk of fire hazards, while ensuring an efficient and long lasting burn.

Fire Starters and Kindling

With your fireplace or stove clean, you can start building your fire. This begins with your natural fire starters and kindling. Place half the kindling on the base of the fireplace, creating a strong foundation for your kiln dried logs. Remember to always leave a space between the kindling to allow for air circulation.

Place your natural fire starter in the centre of the kindling and light it using your long lighter. Once the fire starter ignites and your fire comes to light, add the remaining pieces of kindling on top. We do recommend placing them criss-cross, ensuring excellent air flow, making it easier for your kiln dried logs to jump to life.

Add Kiln Dried Logs

You should add two to three kiln dried logs directly on the burning kindling, while ensuring you always leave gaps for effective airflow. As these logs catch alight, you can gradually add another one or two logs to the fire, always ensuring you leave spacing between the logs.

Monitor and Adjust

On average, a single kiln dried log can burn for up to two to three hours. You should keep an eye on your fire at all times, ensuring your logs are burning evening. You may need to reposition the logs during the burn..

Adjust for Even Log Burning: Throughout the burning process, vigilantly monitor and adjust the logs as needed to ensure even log combustion. Employ a stove tool to reposition the logs, maintaining a harmonious and efficient log fire.
